Does Tesco Sell Scratch Cards Online?

The question of whether Tesco sells scratch cards online is a common one for lottery enthusiasts. Unfortunately, the short answer is no, Tesco does not currently sell National Lottery scratch cards directly through its website or app. This article will delve into the reasons why, explore alternative ways to purchase scratch cards online, and clarify Tesco’s overall lottery offerings.

Why Tesco Doesn’t Sell Scratch Cards Online

Several factors contribute to Tesco’s decision not to offer online scratch card sales. Primarily, stringent regulations govern online gambling and lottery sales. These regulations are designed to protect vulnerable individuals and prevent underage gambling. Meeting these requirements for online scratch card sales is complex and costly.

Key considerations include:

• Age Verification: Robust age verification systems are crucial, and ensuring 100% accuracy online is challenging.
• Responsible Gambling: Online platforms must implement features to promote responsible gambling, such as spending limits and self-exclusion options.
• Licensing & Compliance: Operating an online lottery requires a specific license from the UK Gambling Commission, adding significant administrative and financial burdens.

Tesco, while a major retailer, likely assesses that the investment and ongoing compliance costs outweigh the potential revenue from online scratch card sales. They primarily focus on in-store sales where age verification is more easily managed.

Where Can You Buy Scratch Cards Online?

While Tesco doesn’t offer them, you can purchase National Lottery scratch cards online through the official National Lottery website: https://www.national-lottery.co.uk/. This is the only legitimate and legal way to buy scratch cards online in the UK.

The National Lottery website provides a secure platform with:

• Age Verification: A thorough age verification process.
• Responsible Gambling Tools: Features to set deposit limits, time limits, and self-exclude.
• Wide Variety: Access to all available scratch card games.
